What to get for competitive play
The KS has just ended, and now we are to plan for the pledge manager.
Which characters, monsters and troops are of certain note when planning for games with a more competitive side?
To be frank I think there is plenty of options in the God Pledge. I consider getting the manticore because its such a big monster, and KS exclusive.

I am getting everything... but.. I do not think I will bring my Kickstarter Exclusives with me to Organized Play...
If one went missing.. I would hate myself forever.. and I would never trust again xD

Re: What to get for competitive play
Hard to tell, because neither are the units 100% set in stone nor do we know a lot about future tournament modes or stuctures.
Maybe youll have to pick a certain amount of troops? Maybe some minis will be restricted because they were KS only...
If you want to pick for competitiveness now the only certain way is to get everything.

Took everything myself, but mainly it is because I like these Mythological games. I admit on what Caine-HoA sais, if you want to be sure, only way for now is to have it all.

That's an expensive way.
Let me put it in another way:
What is your top 3 competitive add ons and expansions?

Re: What to get for competitive play
I think they all add some great troops to be honest.
Heroes of Troy seems pretty important to me since it includes both a god killer and a ranged hero killer.
Oedipus and the sphinx both seem very usefull too.
Hera expansion also seems pretty sweet to me. Autolycus can steal omphalos which is very usefull, Geryon is a powerhouse guard, veteran achilles seems very overpowered and Hera seems like a very good goddess to have with her +2 rp and tokens that weaken her attackers.
So yes, that's what I went for.

Colchidian dragon and Python seems even stronger for defense than Geryon. I had sort of ruled him out.

He can attack three targets and has mighty throw. So he can really clear out an area and scatter enemies around or push them in the lava or off a cliff.

It depends what you see as competitive?Morten Brandt wrote:Which characters, monsters and troops are of certain note when planning for games with a more competitive side?
What is your top 3 competitive add ons and expansions?
Most add-ons have one or more units that can be vital in some tactics. The aforementioned Paris and Diomedes and Agamemnon. Geryon, Hera. The Sphinx and Oedipus. Andromeda. Talos, Pandora, the Eagle. All unique and if combined well, extremely useful units.
Personally I would at least add Troy. It's cheap - and only Ajax and Penthesilea aren't very special.
I am not a fan of the water stuff - so you won't see me recommending the Poseidon box.

@Teowulff, by the very definition can competitive not be everything. Some add-ons/expansions will be more competitively inclined than others. I noticed you didn't mention Rise of the Titans, which is fair enough.

Re: What to get for competitive play
Rise of titans pretty much gives the least value for your money, it's 4 miniatures for the price of a big box expansion. Granted, they are very big so the price matches that, but gameplay wise, every single unit contributes just as much to the game, offering new strategies.
That and it also does not offer new maps, and what map is used for a battle is also important.
I wouldn't count Ajax out just yet, he is incredibly strong for a 3 point unit and should do very well if your god is Artemis who can boost his speed, and your enemy does not have much ways to waste Ajax is turn, forcing him to lose health or discard art of war cards.
Penthesilea has her uses too, considering the negative effect that comes with killing her. It leaves her attacker very vurnerable.
She also boosts troops and brings two art of war cards.

I see it this way: the game has 2 victory conditions. One of them is to kill the opponent's God. Diomedes is the only unit in the game specifically equipped to kill Gods. Which unit/add-on could be more vital? The core box and stretch goals already contain multiple Omphalos runners - but God killers .. "there can only be one". His name is Diomedes, from the Troy box.

Re: What to get for competitive play
Indeed, even though his stats are not that impressive on their own, being immune to all gods their special abilities is huge.
Quite a few gods are not that strong either but their abilities tend to give them a huge advantage.
He can attack Aphrodite without requiring an art of war card and wouldnt get any token on him for it. No token from Hera either on him.
Helios can't pull him in with his whip and while his holy light can show the opponent's hand of cards, Diomedes his activation cards could not be discarded.
He can't be harmed by Zeus his lightning, Ares his fury, etc.
Persephone's movement penalty inflicted on all enemies won't affect him either.
Heck I assume that when he dies, it would not cause Hades to heal a hitpoint and draw a card.

Re: What to get for competitive play
As previously mentioned, Troy expansion contains some key pieces for competitive play. I think the other one would be the Hell Judges. They each have some very unique abilities that I think will be put to great use in highly tactical plays in a competitive setting.

Re: What to get for competitive play
Not sure if Rhadamantus and Aecus are worth it but yes, Minos has a very strong ability that can potentially be game breaking in my opinion, when combined with Eurytheus from the Hera box. It won't surprise me if one of them gets a skill adjustment before the game is released.MaxC wrote:As previously mentioned, Troy expansion contains some key pieces for competitive play. Re: What to get for competitive play
I personally think the other 2 judges have great potential, mostly by playing with enemy positioning. This game definitely revolves around proper positioning of your units and these guys can really mess with that in a way I don't think other units can.
Aeacus can bog down enemy movement and at one crucial time during the battle, he can send one key unit to a completely different location. Tournament players will no doubt learn to find the best opportunity to use that power to great effect.
Rhadamnthus can mess with clusters of enemy units and could be used, for instance, to remove a guard from a vulnerable enemy's area so another unit can swoop in for the kill.
Of course, this depends on whether or not tournaments will allow the use of KSEs. Hell Judges will probably not even be usable in most competitive settings.

Must say Aecus' once per game ability to target a unit and move it away may be very handy. Rhadamant(h)us is less impressive.
The thing is that for those 3RP you can also get a units with Petrify or Charge and Mighty Throw, which can basically achieve the same thing: stop powers from being active, give out "AoW card penalties" and remove units from areas. So I don't really see a unique reason why you would want them in your army list. Not like Diomedes, Paris or Agamemnon, who can not be replaced by similar units - simply because there are none.
