A regenerating troop that guards? Sounds pretty good to me. Put a hero there with bolster and leader, and they'd do an exellent job as guards.
A good companion to those with phalanx as well because they don't die that easily.

Yup they're quite tough. I wouldn't overrate the regeneration though as it only takes place at the end of their activation - while they only have 3 Activation cards. Still a nice bonus, though.

I played againts these guys in a demo game and they were surprisingly resistant. They even managed to be at full strength for a really long time (or came back to full strength shortly after being damaged). Thir 6 defense when more than half full is the highest value you'll see on an unbuffed troop, and their healing means you have to focus them down or they'll be sticking around forever.
